Original Painting. Hand-cut vibrant, unique Boruca mask on recycled wood. I have visited Costa Rica four times, each trip longer than the last. On my first trip I noticed these vibrant wooden masks all over local stores and on my second, I met someone with a blank mask. I asked how he came about that and he said “you can only get them blank directly from the tribe”….and my adventure took a turn. I went 5 hours into the mountains, stayed in a town with bars on every door and window (where they lock you into your hotel when the sun goes down), and followed tiny carved signs and termite nests with sticks made to look like faces, to find the Boruca tribe. I visited them again on my third trip…and indeed found my masks to paint and so much more. Their history and story is incredible, and a huge inspiration in my art.
